Current Research

Development of a Full-Scale Finite Element Model of the F-28 Regional Jet Aircraft, Generate Pre-Test Predictions of Airframe Crash Response, Perform Test-Analysis Comparisons, and Conduct Subsequent Simulations of Impact Onto Water

This project is being conducted jointly with the FAA, the US Army Research Lab, Humanetics, and the NTSB. The F28 is high performance twin-turbo fan narrow-body aircraft with seating in a 3+2 configuration. The MK4000 variant is capable of carrying up to 85 passengers on medium range length routes. The F28 was first type certified by the FAA in 1969 and now the majority of the F28 fleet has retired from service in the United States.  Prior to this full-scale crash test and simulation, three fuselage section tests were performed: an aft section that was loaded only with lead weights, a wing-box section, and a forward section.  Vertical drop tests were conducted using the 70-ft.-drop tower at the Landing and Impact Research Facility (LandIR) at NASA Langley.  The goal of this research is to study the crashworthiness on transport category aircraft.  The proposed full-scale crash test can be broken down into six objectives: 1. To compare and contrast responses in identical aircraft undergoing vertical only to combined vertical and horizontal loading conditions, 2. To examine the effects of horizontal loading on aircraft structure during a crash event, 3. Generate data for the use in calibration of computer modelling efforts, 4. Generate data from onboard ATD’s for the evaluation of injury, 5. To obtain data from experimental seats, 6. To obtain data from new and novel ATD designs including WIAMan and others.  Impact test conditions are 30-ft/s vertical velocity and 70-ft/s forward velocity. The impact surface will be soft soil. The test is to be performed in late June 2019.  LS-DYNA pre-test simulations are expected by end of April 2019.
