Evaluation of new hyperspectral optical measurement techniques for in situ atmospheric aerosols
Laboratory tests and recent field campaigns have been used to test a new hyperspectral (~1 nm spectral resolution) instrument that measures in situ atmospheric aerosols over a wavelength range of 300-700 nm. The most recent deployment aboard the R/V Onnuri during the joint Korea-U.S. – Ocean Color (KORUS-OC) and -Air Quality (KORUS-AQ) campaigns included a filter-based measurement of total aerosol absorption over the same wavelength range. These in situ optical measurements can then be examined in conjunction with other in situ aerosol properties (e.g., chemical composition and size distribution) to better understand relationships between optical and physicochemical aerosol properties. Work is ongoing to evaluate the results in the broader context of the KORUS-OC and KORUS-AQ data sets.
