Abstract:
The DLR is Germany’s national aerospace research center with approximately 8000 employees at 16 facilities. Extensive research and development activities are taking place in the fields of aeronautics, space, energy, transport, and security. The DLR Institute of Aeroelasticity was founded in 1957 and is the only research institute of its kind in Europe. It focuses on multidisciplinary research using experimental approaches and simulation methods for the reliable prediction of aeroelastic phenomena. After a brief introduction of the DLR and the Institute of Aeroelasticity, the Institute’s current research activities in the area of aeroelastic simulations will be presented. Topics cover, amongst others, unsteady aerodynamics at different levels of fidelity, conceptual and preliminary structural design of aircraft, loads analysis for transport aircraft and reduced order modeling. A closer look at CFD-based trim and gust simulations applied to transport aircraft concludes the presentation.

Bio:
Markus holds a Diploma in aeronautical engineering with focus on aerodynamic and structural dynamics at Technical University of Munich, Germany. Since 2008, he has been a Research Engineer at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Institute of Aeroelasticity, department Loads Analysis and Aeroelastic Design. His areas of activity and research include the development of methods for loads analysis, flight dynamics and control of very flexible aircraft, large deformation structural dynamics, and the application of CFD methods in aeroelasticity.
