National Institute of Aerospace and Newport News Public Schools partner through NASA Science grant

 

The National Institute of Aerospace, NIA, was 1 of 27 organizations nationwide to receive funding through a K-12 cooperative agreement award from NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. NASA eClips 4D Multi-Dimensional Strategies to Promote Understanding of Science: Design, Develop, Disseminate, and Discover, will focus on national student misconceptions in science and use student produced videos to increase understanding of science content to students, lifelong learners, informal audiences, and the general public

NIA engaged several partners for the proposal. Newport News Public Schools, NNPS, in Virginia will produce video content, create authentic STEM experiences for students, and serve as a pilot group to field test the new resources.  Students in the NNPS Television Program will work with NIA educators and video production specialists to produce the short video assets, which will be added to the online suite of NASA eClips resources.  NIA educators, including the NNPS Educator-in Residence, Tami Byron, will create and facilitate professional development for educators, both in the local area and across the nation through face-to-face instruction and virtual opportunities.  “Newport News Public Schools is pleased to be part of this cooperative effort to introduce more students to STEM careers,” said Dr. Ashby Kilgore, superintendent of schools. “NNPS has embarked on an aggressive STEM education initiative that prepares teachers and students to take full advantage of local STEM opportunities. We are looking forward to this great partnership.”

The Virginia Latino Higher Education Network, VALHEN, will serve as a primary partner to assist with the approval and distribution of Spanish translations of the student-produced videos. NIA has also teamed with Class Flow, a leading lesson delivery platform from Promethean, to develop and disseminate interactive lessons to connected classrooms across the country, and with The Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment Program, GLOBE, to provide authentic data and data collection experiences for students.

“The educational outreach team at NIA’s Center for Integrative STEM Education is excited to begin developing, evaluating and disseminating new NASA eClips educational products that will augment our existing suite of awarding winning NASA eClips videos, educator guides and classroom resources. I am particularly excited to work with Newport News Public School students on the design and delivery of the new videos. Not only will they experience authentic learning, but their unique perspective will also help ensure that our products are relevant and relatable to students,” said Shelley Spears, Principal Investigator, NASA eClips 4D.

 

NASA eClips 4D builds on the proven and effective multi-media educational program, NASA eClips, educational videos and educator guides developed and produced by NIA for NASA since 2008.
