Yuan Selected as ASME Fellow
Dr. Fuh-Gwo Yuan, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, North Carolina State University, and Samuel P. Langley Distinguished Professor at the National Institute of Aerospace has been named an American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Fellow, an honor bestowed on longtime members who have demonstrated significant engineering achievements. The award recognizes Yuan’s years of dedication to smart sensors, structural health monitoring, as well as the education of future engineers via MS and Ph.D. students.
At NIA, Yuan’s research is focused on smart aircraft structures for structural health management and condition-based maintenance. Research interests include: composite material state awareness (damage state models, virtual load sensors, NDE inverse problems); structural health monitoring (multifunctional materials, damage detection and assessment); and health management (out-of-autoclave composite repair, smart repair, repair durability in damage tolerant and fail safe designs).
“I am honored to receive this formal recognition from ASME,†said Yuan. “I extend special thanks to my students and visiting scholars at NC State for allowing me to be a lifelong learner. Additionally I would like to express my gratitude to NIA for providing an excellent research environment to work in conjunction with NASA Langley Research Center.â€
