THROCKMORTON NAMED NIA VICE-PRESIDENT OF RESEARCH
Hampton, Va. â The National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) has named David A. Throckmorton as Vice President of Research, effective January 18, 2016. Throckmorton takes the reins of the department from Bo Walkley, who retires February 1, 2016.
As the Vice President of Research, Throckmorton will lead the assembly and direction of innovative teams that utilize the capabilities of the Instituteâs research staff, university faculty, government laboratories, and industry partners to accomplish exciting new research and expand the Instituteâs research portfolio.
Dr. Douglas Stanley, President and Executive Director of NIA noted, âWe are extremely pleased that Dave has agreed to join NIA. His extensive experience with NASA and industry research will be critical to NIAâs growth as a leading research and academic institute over the next decade.â
Throckmorton began his career at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton. During his 42 years with NASA, Throckmortonâs experience included working as the Assistant Head in the Aerothermodynamics Branch, and Manager, Space Transportation Programs Office, NASA Langley Research Center; Deputy Director of Engineering, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center; and Deputy Director, NASA Stennis Space Center. Throckmorton also served as Chair and Member of the NASA Independent Standing Review Board for the Orion Project charged with providing NASA management with independent review and assessment of the technical and programmatic status of the project.
Throckmorton has most recently served as Program Manager, Northrop Grumman Corporation, where he managed the Northrop Grumman portion of the engineering support contract at NASA Langley Research Center known as TEAMS (Technology Engineering and Aerospace Mission Support).
Throckmorton holds a Bachelors of Science in Aerospace Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; a Masters of Science in Aerospace Engineering from George Washington University; and completed the Senior Executive Fellows Program at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He is a Fellow and former Board Member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and has received the NASA Exceptional Service Medal and Outstanding Leadership Medal.
