Abstract:
In his talk, Professor Mavris, the newly appointed S.P. Langley Distinguished Professor at NIA, will introduce the Aerospace Systems Design Laboratory (ASDL) and its current organization. ASDL is home to 250 research faculty, Masters and Ph.D students. Since 1992, the program has graduated more than 450 fully funded MS and 130 PhD students.

Professor Mavris will provide an overview of ASDL’s current research as it pertains to System-of-Systems engineering, system-level analysis, and the design of advanced concepts such as airframe and propulsion concepts, missiles, spacecraft, rotorcraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, etc. In particular, Professor Mavris will discuss how current ASDL capabilities align with the challenges that NASA is putting forward with its new strategic thrusts. The capabilities to be discussed include multidisciplinary physics-based design, uncertainty quantification and management, technology assessment and prioritization, safety, manufacturing influenced design, logistics and operations, and the development of interactive and parametric visualization environments to support electronic design reviews and strategic decision making.

Biography:
Prof. Dimitri Mavris earned his Bachelor of Science degree (1984), Master of Science degree (1985) and Doctoral degree (1988), in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Tech. He is the chaired professor of Advanced Aerospace Systems Analysis in Georgia Tech’s School of Aerospace Engineering, and Director of its Aerospace Systems Design Laboratory (ASDL).

Prof. Mavris has co-authored, with his students, in excess of 500 journal and conference papers. Prof. Mavris is recognized internationally as a leader in the field of Multi-disciplinary analysis, optimization and design; Probabilistic design methods; Physics based analysis and design of unconventional vehicles; Requirements definition/analysis; Reduction of analysis, design process cycle time; System-of-systems engineering; Architecture-based systems engineering; Manufacturing Influenced Design; and Data and visual analytics.

Prof. Mavris is a Regents Professor, an AIAA Fellow, member of the ICAS Executive Committee, the AIAA Institute Development Committee, the United States Air Force Scientific Advisory Board, and is the Director of the AIAA Technical, Aircraft and Atmospheric Systems Group.
