With a resurgence of interest and funding in hypersonics, there is a push to advance the state of the art in hypersonic flight from the demonstration stage, to operational vehicles and systems. Unfortunately, testing vehicles larger than X-43/X-51 at true hypersonic flight conditions (Mach number, Reynolds numbers, total enthalpy, clean-air gas composition, etc.) with extended operating times (tens of minutes or longer) exceeds the capabilities of current ground test facilities. The result is that compromises are made and testing is generally done at smaller scales, at the component level, with a vitiated test gas, at off-flight conditions and/or short test times. The lack of a high-quality ground-test dataset of the full vehicle at the proper scales and conditions complicates the accurate prediction of flight performance metrics and operating characteristics that are needed to understand and reduce the risks associated with going to flight.
This workshop will provide a forum for the discussion of:
- Technical challenges associated with hypersonic flight prediction and methods to address them
- Critical assessments of the state of the art for hypersonic flight prediction methods
- Experiences and lessons learned
- Recommendations for:
- Improving flight prediction methods
- Estimating uncertainties for flight prediction
- Risk reduction methods
- Use the results of the workshop to inform program managers and the community
The scope of the workshop includes three broad classes of hypersonic vehicles:
- Atmospheric Boost-Glide vehicles
- Airbreathing-Powered vehicles
- Entry, Decent and Landing vehicles and all aspects of the vehicles, such as:
- Aerothermodynamics and Propulsion
- Structures and Materials
- Guidance and Controls across the full flight trajectory of the vehicle, subsonic to hypersonic.
- Attendance at the workshop is limited to invited organizations.
- Attendees must be U.S. citizens and be registered for the workshop NO LATER THAN JUNE 2, 2017.
- Attendees will be required to show proof of citizenship at the workshop. (Example)
- Attendance at classified presentations requires clearance information to be sent to the U.S. Air Force Academy Security Management Office BY JUNE 2, 2017. (See Visitor and Clearance Information for Classified Session below).

Lodging Information:
Blocks of rooms have been reserved at two hotels for this workshop. The Academy Hotel (40 rooms) @ a room rate of $129-$149.00/per night with hot breakfast included (does not include taxes), and the Marriott (50 rooms) @ a room rate of $149.00/per night (does not include taxes) with no breakfast included.
The Academy Hotel rates include FREE hot daily breakfast with made-to-order omelet and waffle bar, HBO movies, high speed internet, business center, fitness center and pool, local calls and complimentary self-parking. The Marriott offers complimentary WiFi in guest rooms and lobby areas, self-parking, fitness center and pool.

IMPORTANT TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION TO AND FROM THE ACADEMY
*You are welcome to choose another hotel option. However, please be aware that to get on-site at the Academy, we will need to arrive by bus. Buses will be picking attendees up each morning (see Agenda for times) at the Academy Hotel and Marriott ONLY. No other pick-up locations will be offered. Parking is not permitted on-site at the Air Force Academy. If you miss the bus, you will need to contact a cab or Uber. The cab/Uber driver will be able to bring you to the Cadet Area at the Academy. You will then be escorted from the gate to the Fairchild Hall by a badge wearer. You are welcome to contact Mary Catherine Bunde to alert us of your arrival so we can make sure you are escorted to Fairchild Hall.*
To keep bus ridership as even as possible, if you do choose another hotel besides the two mentioned above, please go to the Academy Hotel for your ride on the bus. We have less people staying at the Academy Hotel than the Marriott.
There is no registration fee for the workshop, but there is a charge for the coffee and daily lunches. Please see the menu selections and make your payment via the link below.
Daily Lunch:
You are highly encouraged to select lunch each day, due to the fact that we will be arriving by bus each day to get on-site. There are very limited options to obtain lunch on-site. You are welcome to bring your lunch each day if you prefer.
Coffee and lunch will be provided each day of the workshop for a cost of $25.00/per day.

Optional Group Dinner:
An optional group dinner is planned for Tuesday, June 20th @ 6:30pm at The Warehouse Restaurant â 25 W. Cimarron Street, Colorado Springs, CO. We will enjoy a Fiesta Fajitas Buffet â Steak and Chicken Fajitas, Warm Tortillas, Homemade Salsa & Guacamole, Chips, and Sour Cream. (For Vegetarians there will be Grilled Vegetables as well) and soda/beverage is included in the price of approximately $22.00 per person. You will also be able to order alcoholic beverages for an additional cost. Each person will pay their bills individually.
Optional Tour:
An optional group tour is planned for Thursday, June 22nd at 1:00pm.
There will be a tour of the USAFA Cadet Area, including a visit to the Cadet Chapel, Visitorâs Center and grounds, as well as a mission briefing. It will be followed by a tour of the USAFA Aeronautics Laboratory, one of the best equipped such labs in all of academia.
The tour will last 2 1/2 hours. Buses will pick-up at 3:30pm to return to the hotels.
